Sports Travel Insurance FAQ's

Q: What dates do I need to cover myself for?
With this policy you would need to cover yourself from the date that you leave home to the date that you return to your home – not just for the dates that you will be doing an activity. You don’t need to add on extra days in case your flight is delayed though – if that happens through no fault of yours, you would be covered under the policy.

Q: Do you insure professionals?

No, we can only insure amateurs and semi-professionals (classed as those earning less than £5,000 per year from their sport).

Q: Can I take out this policy after I have left my country of residence?
No you can’t. It must be taken out prior to departure.

Q: I am going away for a week, but only doing my sport on 1 day. Do I need to cover the sport for the whole week?
If you buy the policy online, yes we do. However if it is in a high sports group, call or email us and we can tailor a quote for you. If you are going to be practicing for an event earlier in the week, you need to consider whether you want cover for that though under the policy.
If you already have general / basic travel insurance you can take out our Activity TopUp policy for the day(s) that you will be doing the sport.

Q:Do you provide cover for children?
Children aged 6 yrs and over can travel on their own provided they pay the full adult premium. On a family Sports Travel policy, the first child aged between 2-16*yrs is charged at 50% of the standard premium provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian also insured, the second child would be charged at 25% of the adult rate, and 3rd or subsequent children would be free, as would any children under 2. *The same discounts also apply to children up to 23yrs if dependent and in full time education. Otherwise anyone over 16yrs is charged the standard adult premium.

Q:How do you define a partner?
A partner is considered to be the spouse/common law partner/girlfriend/boyfriend of the insured person.

Q:Can you cover me if I’m pregnant?
We can cover you provided that you are not expecting to give birth within 2 months of return from the trip and you will not be travelling against medical advice.

Q:Will I be covered if I am competing in a competition?
Most of our sports include cover for competitive sports unless they say otherwise. Often we then list the same sport including competition, so please check our full list of sports, or contact us to check.

Q:What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen abroad?
You should report it to the local police in the country you are in as soon as possible and obtain a crime reference number (LS01 is the Lost or Stolen Passport Notification form). You should also inform the UK Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO), embassy, or consulate of the country you are in. The FCO will issue you with a replacement travel document so you can return to the UK. Visit their website www.gov.uk/government/organisations/foreign-commonwealth-office to find out details of the nearest FCO office to wherever you are, or call +44 (0)207 0081500 (0870 606 0290 within the UK).

Q:What documents do I need to take on holiday with me?
We advise that you take the relevant Policy Wording Booklet and your travel insurance certificate / schedule away with you. We can also provide you with a policy card that contains all your insurance details and is easy to carry around. To obtain a card, please contact us using the details on the contact page. Please note there will be an additional charge for postage of your documents and / or card. If travelling to Europe, we would also recommend that you take the EHIC card. This can be obtained for free via the following website: www.nhs.uk/ehic (beware – other websites will charge you for this card).

Q:What happens if my baggage/equipment is lost when I arrive?
It is important to obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) immediately from the airport authorities. When you return to the UK, send off this with all other relevant documentation to validate your claim. If your baggage/equipment is mislaid on your outward journey, an amount can be claimed for obtaining replacement essentials subject to the benefit levels for Delayed Baggage shown under your policy in your Policy Wording Booklet.

Q: What is the longest period for which you can get fixed cover?

You can get single trip cover for any period of up to 12 continuous months so long as you include the day you leave and the day you return. The annual multi-trip policy will allow for multiple trips so long as each trip does not exceed the multi-trip limit as detailed on your policy (Bronze: 35 days, Silver: 60 days, Gold: 90 days (or 89 days for the USA)). You must return to the UK for a minimum of 2 nights before starting a new trip. Please call for further details.

Q:Can I extend my cover while I’m away?
Yes, but you will need to call us on the number at the top of the page at least 3 days before your policy has expired, or before the multi-trip limit has been exceeded (Bronze policies: 35 days, Silver: 60 days, Gold: 90 days). You cannot extend cover after this. Please note our office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5.30pm.

Q:Do I need to carry my policy and card details when travelling?
To use the 24hr emergency assistance, all you need is the 24hr medical emergency number. Although you do not need to carry your card and schedule with you for the policy to be valid, some foreign medical providers may wish to see evidence of your cover. Please note you will only receive a card if you choose to have your documents sent to you by post, for which there is an additional charge. Otherwise the details will be only be sent to you via email.

The same applies to a child under the age of 18 if still fully dependent and in full time education. A child who is aged 18 to 23 if dependent and in full time education, may travel independently of their parents. Any child aged 18 and over, who is not in full time education, will not to pay the full adult premium.

Sports Team FAQ's

Q: We are a professional team. Can you cover us?
No, we only insure amateurs or semi-professionals. We define an amateur as someone who earns no more than £4000 per annum from their sport.

Q: Will this policy cover us for playing abroad as a team?
Yes and no! All the benefits listed for this policy still apply if one of your team gets injured abroad whilst playing for your team. However, this policy does not include any cover for Medical Expenses abroad or Repatriation, so you should ensure that you have a separate policy that covers that. See our Sports Travel policy for a quote for either individuals or groups.

Q: Do you insure professionals players?

No, we can only insure amateur and semi-professional players (classed as those earning less than £5,000 per year from their sport).

Q: Who will be covered under the policy?
After you have selected the sport that you will be doing, all the members of that team, plus extra members / substitutes in the squad will be covered. So, for example for an 11-a-side football team, you would have cover for a total squad size of 26.

Q: We only have 25 players and they play on either our A or B team. Can we just take out one policy to cover the total squad?
No – if you have 2 teams, you would need to take out 2 policies. A record should be kept of who is playing for which team on which day / match which you would be asked to produce in the event of a claim.

Q: Some of our players would like a higher level of loss of earnings cover. Can we add this on under the policy?
No – the benefits are fixed, and are the same for all members of the team / squad. However, individuals can take out their own Sports Accident policy, and cover themselves for higher levels of loss of earnings for example.

Q: If one of our team gets injured and can’t work, how much will he /she be able to claim?
This will depend upon the level of cover that you have taken out, as we offer varying levels of loss of earnings / temporary total disablement benefit. You would need to check your documents to see this. The policy has a 2 week deferment period, so you will not be able to claim anything for the first 2 weeks off work, and you will never be able to claim for more than 75% of your normal take home pay.

Q: How is my policy delivered?
All policies will be sent via email and can take up to 5 minutes to arrive in your inbox. Please check your junk mail folder if you appear to have not received it. If requested, we can also send a hard copy of your policy via post for an additional charge.

Q: How can I amend the address or contact details on the policy?
You can change the above details online by logging into your customer area using your member login, or you can call us on the number at the top of the page.

Q: What if we lose our policy?
You can’t as such. Your policy information will always be held in your unique online customer area if you purchased it online. If you lose your paper documents, just email us or call us on the number at the top of the page and we can resend them.

Q: Can you refund us if we change our mind about the policy and want to cancel?
If our cover does not meet your needs, we will refund your premium in full provided that you advise us within 14 days, and the cover start date is in the future. You will need to provide evidence that you have not used the policy and you cannot have made a claim or be planning to make a claim. The premium will be refunded to the card used to purchase the policy.

Q: Do your policies cover third party liability?
Yes, this policy types include third party liability cover, also known as personal liability. However, you may find that some sports have restrictions / exclusions for Personal liability. This policy will not cover you or your team for Public Liability.

Q: Can we get a discount for group bookings?
Yes, we offer a 5% discount for 5 or more team policies and a 10% discount for 10 or more, taken out at the same time.

Q: Does this policy include cover for any of our players with pre-existing medical conditions or who have had an injury in the last two years?
No it doesn’t. A player who has had an injury in the last 2 years would be covered for injuries incurred as a result of a accident whilst playing for your team. However, if the injury related to an old injury incurred in the last 2 years, he would not be eligible to claim for that. Eg, if he tore his left ACL ligament 18 months ago, and did the same thing again, he could not claim for that.

Q: Are there exclusions or limitations to my policy?
Yes, there are some exclusions which are detailed in the policy wording. To check the policy exclusions, please have a look at the policy wording booklet relevant to the policy in question.

Q: How do we make a claim?
Making a claim is straightforward with us. Please see our claims page for details.

Q: Will the football (soccer) policy you offer cover us for training as well as tournaments?
Yes. There is no restriction with most of our sports with regards to taking part in competitions or organised matches. Unless we specifically list it as excluding competition or non-competitive then you would be covered for competitions.
