What does plasterers insurance cover?
Our insurance for plasterers offers the essential business cover you need to protect against potential claims, helping you operate securely and avoid financial losses. With public liability included, you also have the option to add extras like employers’ liability, tailored to the specific needs and size of your business. Whether you operate as a sole trader or run a larger business we can offer the cover you need.
Our policy is flexible to your needs. You can customise our Contractors All Risk cover to meet your specific requirements. Choose the level you need for contractors works, plant and tools you own and hire. If you select one or all of these extras, employee tools and personal effects will be included, up to £500.
Make sure you have the correct insurance for your trade and be sure to check if any exclusions are relevant to what you have planned in policy documentation.
Public Liability
Employers' Liability
Contractors Works
Plant & Tools
Financial Loss
Public Liability
- Up to £5 million available.
- This policy responds to claims where a third party sustains an injury or their property is damaged as a result of your plastering operations. Important note: This excludes damage to the immediate work surface under contract (such as the ceiling you’re currently finishing); separate Contract Works cover is needed for that exposure.
Claims for damage to property that is part of the construction or worksite itself are excluded under public liability. For instance, if the contractor is working on a site owned by someone else and the property forms part of the construction project, such damage would not be covered by this insurance. However, this can be included by adding Contract Works cover.
Employers’ Liability
- Up to £10 million available.
- Mandatory protection for plastering businesses with employees. This cover can protect from claims if a worker or sub-contractor suffers injury or illness arising from their duties on your behalf.
Contractors Works
- Up to £250,000 worth of cover
- This can cover the incomplete plastering work you’re undertaking, along with materials stored on site. Should your unfinished project be damaged by incidents such as fire or flooding, this policy can help fund the necessary remedial work.
Plant & tools hired
- Up to £50,000 worth of cover.
- When you rent larger items like industrial mixers, scaffolding towers, or extraction units, this cover addresses your financial responsibility if those hired items are damaged, plus any continuing hire charges during the replacement period.
Plant & tools owned
- Up to £75,000 worth of cover.
- Covers your tools and equipment, temporary buildings, caravans, or similar that are owned by you and used in connection with any contract works being undertaken by you.
Employees tools & personal effects
- This covers tools and personal items owned by your employees while on any site, or those you’re responsible for under a joint working agreement.
- It’s not available as a standalone cover but comes with either Contract Works or Owned and Hired Plant & Tools cover, with protection up to £500.
Financial Loss
- Up to £5,000 per claim available.
- Covers claims for pure economic loss unconnected to physical injury or property damage; such as when an error in your project timeline results in quantifiable financial harm to a client.
- Bona Fide Sub-contractors: Independent contractors operating under their own control must carry their own insurance coverage.
- Late Delivery: Financial losses stemming from delayed or failed delivery of materials and products.
- The Working Area: Damage occurring to the specific wall, ceiling, or surface that forms part of your active contract (this requires Contract Works cover to be added).
For information on exclusions in your cover please refer to policy documentation.
Why do you need plasterers cover?
As a plasterer, you’re bringing walls and ceilings to life with a smooth, professional finish. However, your day-to-day activities such as mixing materials on site, operating machinery, and navigating busy work environments can expose you to a range of potential liabilities.
Specialist plasters’ insurance can provide crucial financial protection, preventing an unforeseen incident from jeopardising everything you’ve built.
With the right policy in place, you can focus on delivering quality workmanship without worrying about the financial consequences of accidents or mishaps.
These examples highlight the importance of plasterers cover:
Protection against property damage and accidents
A misplaced bucket of render or a client’s child stumbling over your dust sheets can quickly escalate into an expensive claim.
Public Liability insurance covers the compensation and associated legal expenses if your plastering activities result in injury to someone else or damage to their possessions.
Safeguarding your team on site
Plastering puts significant physical demands on workers, from repetitive overhead movements to exposure to fine dust particles. When you employ staff; whether full-time tradespeople or casual labourers; Employers’ Liability insurance isn’t optional; it’s a legal obligation. This policy protects you financially if a team member suffers an injury or illness arising from their employment with you.
Covering the tools of your trade
Your livelihood depends on specialist equipment such as mechanical mixers, quality floats, and access platforms. When a key piece of kit fails unexpectedly or disappears from a job site, the financial impact extends beyond replacement costs; it can halt your entire workflow. Our Tools and Plant cover gets you back up and running without delay.
Our experts explain why...
“Plastering work brings distinct risks – from property damage concerns to equipment protection requirements. Our specialised trade insurance recognises these challenges and delivers comprehensive cover that extends well beyond basic liability. We protect against workplace injury claims, provide materials and equipment cover, and ensure your tools are safeguarded whether they’re owned or hired. This bespoke approach means plasterers can focus on delivering quality craftsmanship, confident that their business has the proper insurance foundation to manage the unforeseen.”

Frequently
Asked Questions
What happens if my plastering work affects neighbouring properties?
If your work accidentally causes damage to a neighbouring property, such as cracks from vibrations or spills over shared boundaries, this can be covered under Public Liability. You must be able to demonstrate that it was a genuine accident and not due to poor planning or unsafe practices.
Am I insured for storing plaster and materials at customer premises?
Yes, materials stored at a customer’s premises are covered under Contract Works, provided they are reasonably secured. Theft or damage from unsecured areas or vehicles may not be covered unless proper precautions are followed.
Am I insured if faulty materials cause my plasterwork to fail?
No, damage or loss due to the use of faulty materials is excluded under the policy. Insurers won’t cover rework or claims related to product failure, poor workmanship, or incorrect mixing ratios.
Does my policy cover accidental damage to customer furnishings from plaster dust or spillage?
Yes, accidental damage to a customer’s property — such as stained furnishings or floors — can be covered under Public Liability, provided the damage is sudden and not due to poor site protection or negligence.
Are mixing equipment and specialist plastering machines covered?
Yes, if you own the equipment and have taken out Owned Plant & Tools cover (up to £75,000). Hired machines would be protected under Hired Plant & Tools (up to £50,000). Equipment must be stored securely when not in use, especially if left in vehicles.
What happens if weather conditions damage my unfinished plastering work?
Damage from weather (e.g. rain or frost) to unfinished work may be covered under the Contract Works section, up to £250,000, provided you’ve taken reasonable precautions to protect the site. Gradual weather-related deterioration or damage due to negligence may not be covered.
Does my insurance cover specialist plastering techniques like lime plastering or Venetian plaster?
Yes, specialist techniques are covered, as long as they are included in your declared activities. For high-value or delicate finishes, you may wish to ensure your Contract Works cover is sufficient to reflect the value of the work and materials involved.
Am I covered for accidental damage to existing plasterwork during renovation projects?
Damage to existing plasterwork may be covered under Public Liability if it occurs accidentally and the surface is not considered part of the property you’re contracted to renovate. However, if the damage is to an area you’re actively working on, you would need Contract Works cover.
Am I insured for internal and external plastering work?
Yes, both internal and external plastering work is covered, provided it forms part of your declared business activities and does not breach any policy limits or exclusions (e.g., working at extreme heights or in restricted areas like tunnels without prior agreement).
What types of insurance should I consider as a self-employed plasterer?
We offer several insurance types for plasterers, including public liability, employers’ liability (if you have employees), contract works insurance for materials and ongoing projects, and tools and equipment insurance to cover against theft, loss, or damage to essential tools.
Can I insure multiple plasterers under the same policy?
Our plasterer insurance policy can often extend to cover multiple workers, but each individual’s role must be disclosed. Additional coverage may be needed based on the number of workers and their specific job responsibilities.
What should I do if I need to work on a high-risk project?
For high-risk projects, like those involving hazardous materials, additional coverage or policy modifications might be required. It’s best to contact us to confirm if existing policies can be tailored to cover these activities.
What happens if my tools are stolen from a job site?
If your tools have been stolen and you’re unable to carry out your work, our tools insurance covers theft as long as it is reported promptly to the authorities and to us. Having a police report can help with processing such claims effectively.
Does tools insurance cover hired equipment?
Our tools insurance includes coverage for both owned and hired equipment, helping avoid the cost of replacements if tools are stolen, lost, or damaged.
Is public liability insurance legally required for plasterers?
Public liability insurance is not legally mandated but is strongly recommended. It protects you against claims for accidental injury or property damage to third parties, helping you meet the expectations of many clients who may require proof of coverage before work begins.
