What does salon insurance cover?
Salon insurance helps protect hair, beauty and nail businesses against the most common risks of running a salon.
It includes public liability, professional treatment and product liability cover, protecting you if a client or member of the public is injured, their property is damaged, or a treatment or product you provide leads to a claim.
You can also extend your cover to protect your staff, premises, equipment, stock and income, with optional extras such as employers’ liability, property damage and business interruption insurance. Additional protection is available for money, theft and assault-related incidents.
Together, these covers help safeguard your salon from unexpected claims and financial disruption, so you can focus on running your business with confidence.
Make sure you have the correct insurance for your activities, and be sure to check if any exclusions are relevant to what you have planned in the policy documentation.

Why do salon owners need insurance?
Running a salon isn’t just about delivering great services, it’s about protecting your clients, your team, your premises and your livelihood. Whether you run a hair salon, beauty salon or nail bar, unexpected incidents can happen, even when you take every care.
Specialist salon insurance gives you confidence and re-assurance, helping protect your business if something goes wrong during day-to-day operations. From client claims to property damage or disruption to your income, the right cover helps keep your salon financially secure.
These are some typical scenarios when hair salon insurance is essential.
When a treatment or product leads to a claim.
Even when treatments are carried out professionally, things don’t always go as planned. A client could have an allergic reaction, experience irritation, or claim a treatment or product caused injury or damage.
Public liability, professional treatment and product liability cover helps protect your salon if a client makes a claim following a treatment or from products you sell or supply. It can cover legal costs and compensation, helping ensure one incident doesn’t seriously impact your business.
When an accident happens in your salon.
Busy salons mean constant movement — clients, staff, equipment and treatments all happening at once. A client could slip, trip, or damage personal property while visiting your premises.
Public liability insurance protects your salon if a client or member of the public is injured or their property is damaged as a result of your business activities, giving you reassurance that you’re protected against costly claims.
Damage to the salon premises
Events like fire, flooding, or vandalism can damage your salon and disrupt your ability to trade. Insurance can help you recover the cost of repairs and support loss of income during the downtime, helping you get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Protecting your staff in case of workplace incidents
If you employ salon staff in any capacity, you’re legally responsible for their safety at work. An injury or illness linked to employer negligence could result in a costly claim.
Employers’ liability insurance helps protect your salon if an employee makes a claim, while additional cover for money, theft, assault and employee dishonesty can provide extra financial protection when you need it most.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Are beauty products and stock covered under my policy?
Yes. Under Property Damage – Stock in Trade, your policy covers beauty products used or sold as part of your services—e.g., skincare, waxing supplies, serums, tanning solutions, lash/brow products, and aftercare items. This protects against accidental loss or damage (subject to policy terms, conditions, and limits).
Note: Jewellery, money, motor vehicles, and furs are excluded from Business Contents.
Does your insurance cover beauty treatments that go wrong?
Yes. Your Public Liability, Professional Treatment & Product Liability (up to £5 million) covers injuries or damage arising from your treatments—e.g., burns, cuts, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and accidental spillages during treatments. It also covers liability from beauty products you sell or supply.
What qualifications do my staff need for policy coverage of advanced beauty treatments?
For beauty treatments, staff should hold appropriate, recognised qualifications/certifications for those procedures and use products/equipment as intended. Apprentices and trainees are included as employees for Employers’ Liability (optional extra), but teaching/instruction itself is not covered.
Am I covered for mobile or home visit beauty treatments?
Yes—if you select “Equipment Away from the Premises.” Portable beauty equipment used off‑site (e.g., mobile kits, facial machines, massage equipment, spray tanning systems) is covered for loss or theft within territorial limits. Treatment liability still applies off‑site, provided activities fall within your insured business description and policy terms.
How does my insurance handle allergic reactions to beauty products or treatments?
Allergic reactions are specifically included under Professional Treatment & Product Liability (within the £5 million limit). To support a claim, keep strong pre-treatment records, patch-test evidence (where recommended), consent forms, and aftercare advice given.
Are there specific hygiene requirements for my beauty salon to maintain coverage?
You are expected to take reasonable precautions and follow industry hygiene standards and manufacturer instructions. Claims may be affected where required security or safety conditions are not met. Maintain clean treatment areas, sterilise or appropriately disinfect tools, use single-use items as intended, and keep written cleaning/sterilisation logs.
Does your policy cover damage to clients’ belongings while they’re having treatments?
Yes—generally under Public Liability if a client’s property is damaged as a result of your business activities (e.g., product spillage on a client’s handbag). Third‑party property damage not connected to your business activities is excluded.
Am I insured for offering new or trending beauty treatments as they emerge?
You’re covered for treatments within your insured business description and dependent on qualifications.
For new or higher‑risk treatments, contact us to add or confirm cover and ensure your team has the right qualifications/training and follows manufacturer protocols. Some treatments may be restricted (see below).
Does your insurance cover beauty apprentices working under supervision?
Yes. Apprentices and trainees are included as employees for Employers’ Liability (optional extra, up to £10 million) if you employ staff. They must work within their training and supervision. Note that teaching/training as a service (i.e., professional instruction) is not covered under this policy.
Are there restrictions on certain high-risk beauty treatments?
Some higher‑risk treatments may require specific underwriting approval, evidence of qualifications, or may be excluded. If you plan to introduce advanced or invasive procedures, please contact us to confirm they can be covered.
What happens if a client slips or falls in my beauty salon?
This would typically be covered under Public Liability if the injury arises from your business activities (e.g., wet floors, obstacles). Keep a cleaning and hazard‑inspection log, display wet floor signage, and record accident reports.
Does your insurance cover rental of beauty salon chairs or spaces to self-employed beauticians?
Your policy covers your beauty salon’s liability. If you rent chairs/spaces, ensure written agreements require self‑employed beauticians to hold their own suitable liability insurance. Your policy does not extend to teaching/instruction and won’t necessarily cover independent operators’ treatment liabilities unless specifically noted.
How does my policy handle complaints about treatment results not meeting expectations?
Claims alleging injury or property damage are addressed under liability sections. Pure dissatisfaction with outcomes (without injury/damage) may not be an insured event. Good practice is to have consultation notes, informed consent, realistic expectation setting, and aftercare guidance to help resolve service complaints.
Are specialist beauty salon fixtures and fittings covered?
Yes. Under Business Contents and Tenant Improvements, the policy can cover treatment beds, salon chairs, fixtures, built‑in counters, fitted treatment rooms, plumbing/ventilation, lighting, and similar improvements you’re responsible for—against insured events.
Does your beauty salon insurance cover complementary refreshments for clients?
Yes, as part of your business activities. If a client incident occurs in connection with serving refreshments (e.g., spill or reaction to a standard item), it can fall under Public Liability—subject to terms. Maintain hygiene standards and disclose common allergens where appropriate.
