Why do lighting technicians need insurance?
As a lighting technician, your responsibilities extend far beyond making a space look good. You’re responsible for safe installation, correct operation, and delivering lighting designs that meet both creative and technical requirements. Even with experience and careful planning, unexpected issues can still arise.
Having specialist lighting tech insurance in place means that if a claim is made against you, from incidents such as accidents, a technical fault, or a lighting setup that didn’t perform as expected – you’re supported. Insurance can help to protect your finances, your professional reputation, and provide support when things go wrong unexpectedly.
Lighting technician insurance provides cover in the following common situations:
Public Liability for lighting technicians'
Lighting work often takes place in busy venues, studios, or public spaces, where members of the public, performers, and crew are present. Accidents can happen; for example, if a light stand is knocked over, a cable causes someone to trip, or a fixture damages a venue’s ceiling or rigging.
Public liability insurance helps cover compensation claims and legal costs if you’re held responsible for injury or property damage, so a single incident doesn’t put your business at risk.
Professional indemnity insurance
If you’re involved in lighting design, programming, or advising clients on technical setups, there’s always a risk that something doesn’t go to plan. A client may claim your lighting design was unsuitable for the space, that programming errors caused delays, or that incorrect advice led to additional costs or lost revenue.
Professional indemnity insurance helps cover legal defence costs and any compensation awarded, even if the claim is unfounded. It gives you peace of mind when taking on creative or technically complex projects.
Equipment cover
Your equipment, including lighting fixtures, control desks, dimmers, cables, rigging hardware, and laptops, is no doubt, critical to your work. If your gear is stolen from a venue, damaged during transport, or affected by an accident on site, it can bring projects to a standstill.
Equipment cover helps replace essential items on a new-for-old basis, allowing you to get back to work quickly with minimal disruption.
Personal accident cover
Lighting technicians often work in physically demanding environments. Lifting heavy fixtures, working on ladders and repetitive tasks can increase the risk of injury. Slips, trips, and falls are also common hazards.
Personal accident cover provides financial support if you’re injured and unable to work, helping to cover lost income or living costs while you recover.
Our experts explain why...
“We understand how lighting technicians have specific work demands; with tight schedules, complex setups, and real responsibility on every job, it’s a role that requires both technical skill and creative thinking.
That’s why our lighting technician insurance is designed around the realities of the work. Whether you’re freelancing or part of a small production team, our cover is there when things don’t go to plan – helping with claims, disputes, and the unexpected.
The aim is simple: to give lighting technicians the confidence to focus on the job, knowing they’re backed by insurance that can grow with their work.”

No — electrical faults and loss of performance are not covered.
However, if an electrical fault causes injury or property damage, Public Liability may apply.
Show cancellation, downtime, or equipment failure alone is not covered.
Am I covered for international touring and overseas work?
Yes — with the Overseas Extension.
This add‑on provides:
Up to 30 days of cover abroad per year

Yes — if you have added Equipment Cover.
Equipment Cover provides protection up to £25,000, including “new for old” replacement on items under three years old.

However:
If working at height is not part of your declared scope, it may be classed as “expertise out of your scope of work,” which would not be covered.
