Why do kitchen fitters need insurance?
When you’re on a job, the last thing you want to worry about is what might go wrong. That’s where our kitchen fitters insurance cover steps in, giving you the confidence to focus on your work without the fear of financial setbacks from potential claims.
Here are a few scenarios to help explain why you need builders kitchen fitter insurance:
Protection from claims if a client suffers an injury.
If you’re kitchen fitting at the property of a client, it’s possible a third party could sustain an injury as a result of your work here, leading to a claim against you.
Having public liability insurance for kitchen fitters can protect you as a tradesperson from costly claims that arise because of these incidents.
An employee, temporary worker or volunteer suffers a workplace accident.
Whatever your trade, as a business you are responsible for providing a safe workplace for your employees. If employees or temporary workers are involved in an accident on a kitchen fitting project they could bring a claim against you for medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages.
Employers’ liability is a legal obligation to protect you from these situations, with fines of £2500 per day for failing to comply.
Accidental damage caused to plant and tools you own or hire.
As a self-employed kitchen fitter you may have access to specialist tools and plant equipment, to aid you in providing the work you are undertaking. These tools could be frequently subject to damage and loss.
Without Plant and Tools insurance, you’d have to cover the cost of replacing these expensive tools, which could impact your earnings. However, with the insurance in place, the cost of repairing or replacing your tools would be covered, allowing you to continue your work without financial worry.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Am I insured if faulty appliance connections cause damage after I’ve finished?
Only in limited cases. If the fault results in third-party injury or property damage, Public Liability might cover the resulting damage — but not the cost to fix or replace the faulty connection itself. If the failure is purely a result of defective work, it is excluded.
Am I covered for accidental damage to flooring or walls during kitchen installation?
Yes, accidental damage to surrounding property (e.g. scratched flooring, marked walls) during fitting is typically covered under Public Liability, provided it’s not due to negligence or poor practice.
Are kitchen units and appliances covered whilst stored on customer premises?
Yes, if you have Contract Works cover, units, appliances, and materials you’re responsible for are protected while stored at the site, provided they are stored securely. Theft from unsecured areas or vehicles may not be covered.
Am I insured for delays caused by incorrect measurements or manufacturing defects?
No, your policy excludes cover for delays, rework, or financial losses due to measurement errors, mis-orders, or product faults. These are considered part of your professional risk and must be managed contractually.
What happens if my kitchen installation causes water damage to the property?
If your installation accidentally causes water damage (e.g. from a pipe you connected), this could be covered under Public Liability. However, any faulty workmanship or incorrect installation is not covered — only the resulting damage may be insured, not the faulty work itself.
Are my specialist kitchen fitting tools like worktop jigs and hinge boring machines covered?
Yes, tools like jigs, routers, and hinge borers are covered if you opt for the add-on Owned Plant & Tools policy. If they are stored in a locked, unattended vehicle, you’ll need the Tools of Trade extension to ensure theft and damage cover applies.
Does my policy cover costly kitchen appliances if I damage them during installation?
Yes, but only under Contract Works if the appliance is part of the project and the damage occurs before handover. Once installed and handed over, any damage or malfunction would be excluded unless resulting in third-party injury or damage (which may be covered under Public Liability).
Am I insured for connecting gas appliances or altering gas supplies?
Only if you are Gas Safe registered and this work is part of your declared activities. Unregistered gas work is excluded from cover and also a legal offence. Always ensure your qualifications and declarations are accurate and up to date.
Am I covered if I accidentally damage expensive granite or quartz worktops?
Public Liability does not cover materials you’re actively working on. However, if you have Contract Works cover, it can protect worktops, units, and materials under your care against accidental damage or loss during installation, up to your chosen limit.
Am I insured for both budget kitchens and high-end luxury installations?
Yes, your policy covers kitchen fitting work at all levels — from budget installations to premium, bespoke kitchens — as long as the activity is within your declared trade and the contract value doesn’t exceed the policy limit (e.g. £2 million). For high-value items, ensure your add-on cover for Contract Works or Plant & Tools, reflects their cost.
