Protection for the Dogs You Train
Care, Custody and Control (Vet Fees)
- Up to £100,000 cover (£25,000 per animal).
- This is essential for trainers. It covers veterinary costs if a dog is accidentally injured during a session—for example, a dog might pull a muscle on agility equipment or may get injured during a socialisation exercise.
Non-Negligent Cover
- Training can be unpredictable. If an animal suffers an injury or becomes ill during a session through no fault of your own, you are still protected for the resulting vet fees, if a claim is made against you.
Travel Expense Reimbursement
- If a pet is lost or injured while in your care and the owner is forced to return early from a trip to deal with the emergency, this cover could reimburse their extra travel expenses up to £1,000.
Liability and Professional Reputation
Public Liability
- Up to £10 million cover.
- This is your primary protection against claims from the public. It covers you if a dog in your class causes an injury to another person or animal, or if you accidentally damage a client’s property while conducting a home visit.
Loss of Keys
- Up to £10,000 cover.
- If you’re a keyholder for clients, perhaps if you offer other pet care activities, we cover the full cost of replacing locks and resetting security alarms if those keys are lost or stolen.
Loss of Money
- We can protect up to £5,000 of your business cash, such as session fees collected in person, against theft or loss while at your home, the training site, or in transit.
Your Training Assets
Equipment Cover
- £250 included as standard (choose to increase up to £30,000).
- We protect the specialised tools of your trade, including agility tunnels, jumps, long-lines, clickers, and even the tablets you use for client records, against theft, loss, or accidental damage.
Close Family Extension
- If family members help you set up equipment or manage dogs during a class, they are covered under your Public Liability. This allows your family to support the business without the need for a separate Employers’ Liability policy.
Professional Indemnity
- Highly recommended for trainers. This protects you if a client claims your professional advice led to a loss or an injury. For example, if they follow a specific training technique you recommended and claim it resulted in their dog becoming more reactive.
Employers’ Liability – up to £10 million
- A legal requirement if you hire assistants or sub-contractors to help with your classes.
Legal Expenses – up to £100,000
- Access to a 24-hour helpline for assistance with contract disputes, land-use permissions for training, or tax protection.
Personal Accident
- Provides a financial benefit if you sustain an injury during a training session, such as a bite or a fall, that prevents you from working.
- Dangerous Dogs: Dogs or crossbreeds classified under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
- Professional Standards: Operating without the necessary qualifications or certifications required for certain types of advanced behavioural work.
- Dog walkers are limited to walk a maximum of 6 dogs at one time.
- Pre-existing medical conditions in animals.
- Injuries to animals you own can occur during incidents that happen while caring for other animals or during your personal time.
- Your business operating without a licence when a licence is a mandatory requirement e.g. animal boarding.
Why do you need dog training cover?
Your clients put trust in your services for direction with their dog behaviour and part of this responsibility is to plan for the unexpected. Training can provide huge benefit to dog owners but sometimes things can go wrong.
Specialist dog training insurance is vital protection for unforeseen circumstances. It ensures you avoid expensive losses from claims that could be submitted against you. These are some examples that highlight the importance of dog training insurance:
Protect against claims if a member of the public gets injured.
While training a dog in your care, there’s a risk that an incident could occur, potentially causing injury to a customer or bystander. Additionally, accidents happen, and you might unintentionally damage your client’s property while delivering your services.
Public liability insurance specifically tailored for dog training provides the necessary cover to protect you against claims stemming from these incidents.
Financial protection from vet expenses.
Whilst no one wants harm to come to any animal it’s important to ensure you are covered to get them treatment if accidents happen. If an animal is injured during a training session following an exercise you’ve proposed and needs treatment.
Care, Custody, and Control cover protects you if an animal is lost, injured, becomes ill, or suffers a fatality while in your care.
In case you lose a client’s key.
If you access your clients’ property and have responsibility for their door keys. Loss of key cover covers you for new keys and locks, the cost of re-setting intruder alarms and associated call-out costs if you were to lose them.
Cover from costly dog training equipment losses.
If your training equipment gets damaged or goes missing during a session, the expenses can quickly add up. These situations can disrupt your business, making it harder to offer the same quality of service your clients expect.
With dog training equipment cover, you can quickly replace or repair your essential tools and ensure that you can continue to provide top-notch care and training without interruption.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Does my policy need to include public liability for sessions in clients’ homes across the UK?
Yes. Public Liability (up to £10 million) applies whether you are working at your premises, in a client’s home, or in public spaces. This protects you if a third party is injured or their property is damaged during your training or behaviour sessions.
Are behavioural assessments carried out in group classes treated differently for insurance purposes?
Liability and Care, Custody & Control. You must, however, comply with policy limits (e.g., maximum numbers of dogs) and ensure you are working within a safe and insured environment.
Is professional indemnity cover recommended for giving written behaviour reports?
Yes. Professional Indemnity (up to £1 million) is recommended if you provide written assessments, behaviour plans, or expert advice. It protects you against claims arising from alleged errors, omissions, or negligence in your professional work.
Are travel costs to clients outside my local council area relevant to my insurance?
No. Travel costs themselves are not insured, but your cover (Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, and Care, Custody & Control) applies across the UK when you are working. You may, however, want to check your motor insurance if you use your own vehicle for business.
Does my policy need to reflect working with assistance dogs or therapy animals?
No special adjustment is required. Provided dog trainer/behaviourist is selected as one of your insured business activities, working with assistance dogs or therapy animals falls within the scope of cover.
