Public Liability
- Up to £5 million available.
- This protects you from claims involving third-party injury or property damage. For kitchen fitters, this might include water damage stemming from a faulty connection or a homeowner tripping over materials in the working area. Important exclusion: This does not extend to the specific units or appliances you are currently fitting; separate Contract Works cover is required for that risk.
Employers’ Liability
- Up to £10 million available.
- Mandatory legal protection for kitchen fitting businesses with employees or trainees. This policy responds when a worker sustains injury or illness arising from their employment with you.
Contractors Works
- Up to £250,000 worth of cover
- Insures the incomplete installation and materials under your care. Should a kitchen you’ve partially fitted be destroyed by fire or flooding before completion, this policy can fund the replacement supplies and labour costs needed to reinstate the installation.
Plant & tools hired
- Up to £50,000 worth of cover.
- When you rent specialist equipment such as heavy-duty lifting apparatus for stone worksurfaces or commercial dust extraction systems, this cover addresses your financial liability for damage to those items, plus any ongoing rental charges.
Plant & tools owned
- Up to £75,000 worth of cover.
- Covers your tools and equipment, temporary buildings, caravans, or similar on-site that are owned by you and used in connection with any contract works being undertaken by you.
- Covers your tools and equipment off-site if locked in an unattended vehicle. This is only available as an extension of plant & tools owned cover and covers your own portable tools, including power driven portable tools and business equipment, when kept in a locked vehicle and left unattended.
Employees tools & personal effects
- This covers tools and personal items owned by your employees while on any site, or those you’re responsible for under a joint working agreement.
- It’s not available as a standalone cover but comes with either Contract Works or Owned or Hired Plant & Tools cover, with protection up to £500.
Financial Loss
- Up to £50,000 per claim available.
- Covers claims relating to economic loss that doesn’t stem directly from bodily injury or physical property damage.
- Bona Fide Sub-contractors: Independent tradespeople (such as electricians or gas engineers) you engage who operate autonomously must maintain their own separate insurance arrangements.
- Non-Delivery: Economic losses caused by delayed delivery of kitchen units, worksurfaces, or appliances from your suppliers.
- The Item Being Fitted: Damage to the specific cupboard, worktop, or appliance you are currently installing (this requires Contract Works cover to be added).

Why do kitchen fitters need insurance?
Fitting a kitchen demands coordination of cabinetry, substantial appliances, and critical utility services. Even for highly skilled fitters, operating in confined spaces where water and electrical supplies intersect creates considerable hazards that could threaten your livelihood.
Specialist insurance offers the safeguarding necessary to address these diverse risks, ensuring that an accident during your kitchen fitting service doesn’t lead to devastating financial repercussions.
Here are some scenarios to help explain why you need builders kitchen fitter insurance:
Protection against property damage
There is a significant risk of property damage during kitchen installations. For example, if an installer accidentally damages a high‑value induction hob, the client may submit a claim to recover the cost.
Public Liability insurance handles the legal costs and compensation payments when your work results in third-party injury or property damage.
Responsibility for your installation team
Kitchen fitting frequently demands collaborative effort, with labourers or trainees assisting with manoeuvring heavy units and positioning. When you employ staff, Employers’ Liability insurance is a statutory obligation. This cover ensures that if a team member is injured whilst whilst working for you, the resulting claim can be addressed by this cover.
Security for your specialised fitting tools
Your business depends on an extensive range of equipment, from precision worktop jigs and routers through to cordless drills and plumbing tools. When your kit is stolen from your vehicle or damaged at a client’s property, the replacement expense can run into thousands of pounds.
Our Tools and Plant cover enables you to replace your professional equipment swiftly, maintaining project timelines and protecting your revenue.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Am I insured if faulty appliance connections cause damage after I’ve finished?
Only in limited cases. If the fault results in third-party injury or property damage, Public Liability might cover the resulting damage — but not the cost to fix or replace the faulty connection itself. If the failure is purely a result of defective work, it is excluded.
Am I covered for accidental damage to flooring or walls during kitchen installation?
Yes, accidental damage to surrounding property (e.g. scratched flooring, marked walls) during fitting is typically covered under Public Liability, provided it’s not due to negligence or poor practice.
Are kitchen units and appliances covered whilst stored on customer premises?
Yes, if you have Contract Works cover, units, appliances, and materials you’re responsible for are protected while stored at the site, provided they are stored securely. Theft from unsecured areas or vehicles may not be covered.
Am I insured for delays caused by incorrect measurements or manufacturing defects?
No, your policy excludes cover for delays, rework, or financial losses due to measurement errors, mis-orders, or product faults. These are considered part of your professional risk and must be managed contractually.
What happens if my kitchen installation causes water damage to the property?
If your installation accidentally causes water damage (e.g. from a pipe you connected), this could be covered under Public Liability. However, any faulty workmanship or incorrect installation is not covered — only the resulting damage may be insured, not the faulty work itself.
Are my specialist kitchen fitting tools like worktop jigs and hinge boring machines covered?
Yes, tools like jigs, routers, and hinge borers are covered if you opt for the add-on Owned Plant & Tools policy. If they are stored in a locked, unattended vehicle, you’ll need the Tools of Trade extension to ensure theft and damage cover applies.
Does my policy cover costly kitchen appliances if I damage them during installation?
Yes, but only under Contract Works if the appliance is part of the project and the damage occurs before handover. Once installed and handed over, any damage or malfunction would be excluded unless resulting in third-party injury or damage (which may be covered under Public Liability).
Am I insured for connecting gas appliances or altering gas supplies?
Only if you are Gas Safe registered and this work is part of your declared activities. Unregistered gas work is excluded from cover and also a legal offence. Always ensure your qualifications and declarations are accurate and up to date.
Am I covered if I accidentally damage expensive granite or quartz worktops?
Public Liability does not cover materials you’re actively working on. However, if you have Contract Works cover, it can protect worktops, units, and materials under your care against accidental damage or loss during installation, up to your chosen limit.
Am I insured for both budget kitchens and high-end luxury installations?
Yes, your policy covers kitchen fitting work at all levels — from budget installations to premium, bespoke kitchens — as long as the activity is within your declared trade and the contract value doesn’t exceed the policy limit (e.g. £2 million). For high-value items, ensure your add-on cover for Contract Works or Plant & Tools, reflects their cost.
