What does gas fitter insurance cover?
Gas fitter insurance can cover the risks you face when installing, servicing and repairing gas appliances and systems for your customers.
Public liability insurance for gas fitters provides a strong foundation, helping protect you if your work accidentally causes injury to someone or damage to their property.
You can then add cover to reflect the way your business operates. This can include protection for tools and equipment, including tools stolen from your van, as well as owned or hired plant. Contractors works insurance can provide wider protection for work in progress while you’re carrying out a job.
If you employ staff, employers’ liability insurance can be included and professional indemenity can also be added.
Choose the types and levels of cover that match your work, so your gas engineer insurance reflects the risks your business actually faces.
Make sure you have the correct insurance for your trade and be sure to check if any exclusions are relevant to what you have planned in policy documentation.

Public Liability for gas fitters
- Cover of up to £5 million is available.
- Protects gas fitters against claims from third parties, such as homeowners, customers or members of the public, who are injured or whose property is damaged because of gas installation, maintenance or repair work.
- Does not cover damage to third-party property that forms part of the work you have been contracted to complete.
Public Liability Insurance excludes damage to property that forms part of the gas fitting work you are carrying out.
For example, if you’re installing a boiler or repairing gas pipework and accidentally damage the boiler, pipework or other part of the installation you’re responsible for, this wouldn’t usually be covered under Public Liability Insurance.
Protection for this type of damage can be added through Contractors Works cover.
Product Liability
Protects gas fitters against claims if products, materials or goods supplied and incorporated into a construction project cause injury or damage to another person’s property.
Employers’ Liability
- Cover of up to £10 million is available.
- Covers claims if an employee, apprentice or labourer is injured or dies because of the employer’s negligence.
- If they or their representative seek compensation, cover could handle the cost of the claim, provided policy terms have been complied with.
- Employers’ Liability Insurance is a legal requirement if you employ any staff members.
Professional Indemnity
- Cover up to £500,000 is available.
- Protects gas fitters who provide professional advice or specifications if a customer claims they’ve suffered a financial loss because of a professional mistake.
- Covers claims arising from negligent acts, errors or omissions by you or your employees while providing professional services.
- Does not typically cover poor workmanship, faulty materials or the cost of correcting defective work. See full policy terms.
Contractors Works
- Cover of up to £250,000 is available.
- Covers loss of or damage to gas fitting work in progress that you’re responsible for.
- Includes materials being used as part of the job, whether you’re carrying out installations, repairs, refurbishments or other gas engineering projects.
Hired plant & tools cover
- Cover of up to £50,000 is available.
- Covers loss of or damage to hired tools, specialist gas fitting equipment and plant used while carrying out fitting work.
- Also covers your legal liability for ongoing hire charges following damage to hired equipment.
Owned plant & tools cover
- Cover of up to £75,000 is available.
- Covers the tools, testing equipment and specialist gas fitting equipment you own and use for your work.
Tools left in a vehicle
- Available as an extension to Owned plant and tools cover only.
- Covers your portable tools, including power tools and gas fitting equipment, when locked in an unattended vehicle away from the worksite.
Employees tools & personal effects
- Provides cover of up to £1000.
- Covers tools and personal belongings owned by your employees while they are working on-site.
- Also covers items belonging to people you are responsible for under a joint working agreement.
- This is not available as standalone cover. It must be included with Contract Works, Owned Plant and Tools or Hired Plant and Tools cover.
Financial Loss
- Provides up to £50,000 of cover, for accidental financial loss to another party that you are liable for.
- Covers you if a customer suffers a financial loss that is not caused by injury or property damage and you are legally liable.
- This does not include cover for financial losses relating to non-completion or late completion of works you are undertaking.
There are some situations where protection will not apply. This can include:
- Bona fide subcontractors who are expected to hold their own appropriate insurance.
- Any work undertaken over 15m from the surrounding ground level.
- Poor workmanship or the cost of correcting your own work.
- Work you are not qualified or legally permitted to carry out, where specific qualifications, registrations or regulatory requirements apply.
For information on exclusions in your cover please refer to policy documentation.
Why do you need gas fitter liability insurance?
Gas engineering work can involve a range of risks, from accidental gas related incidents to damage caused while installing, servicing or repairing appliances and pipework.
Even with the right qualifications, careful checks and good working practices, unexpected incidents can still happen.
Gas fitter liability insurance can help protect your business against the cost of claims if your work accidentally injures someone or damages their property. This could include damage caused during an installation or an accident involving a customer or member of the public.
Having suitable cover in place means you can focus on the job, knowing your business has financial protection if something goes wrong.
If you work on construction sites or as a subcontractor, you may also be required to provide proof of Public Liability Insurance before you can start work.
Please note: You may also find that it is a regulation of your profession to have certain cover. It’s worth checking with the trade body, what they advise.
Here are some common examples highlighting why gas engineers typically need insurance:
Protection from claims if a client suffers injury.
Working in homes, commercial premises and on construction sites on gas fitting projects comes with typical liability risks. Someone could trip over your tools, be injured by equipment or suffer an accident while you’re carrying out installation, servicing or repair work.
If a customer, contractor or member of the public makes a claim against you, public liability insurance can help cover the associated legal fees and compensation costs.
An employee is injured while carrying out heating work.
Gas engineering can involve heavy equipment, confined spaces, hot surfaces, awkward working positions and working at height. Even with appropriate risk assessments and safe working practices, accidents can still happen.
If an employee or temporary worker is injured while working for you, they could make a claim for medical costs, lost earnings or rehabilitation.
Employers’ liability insurance is a legal obligation to protect you from these situations, with fines of £2500 per day for failing to comply.
Gas engineering tools or equipment are damaged or stolen.
Specialist tools and equipment are essential for keeping jobs moving. If a specific piece of gas fitting equipment is damaged or stolen, replacing it could be costly and may leave you unable to complete scheduled work.
Tools and plant cover can help with the cost of repairing or replacing equipment you own or hire, helping to minimise disruption to your business.
Gas fitting work in progress is damaged.
You may be part-way through gas fitting project (replacement or installation for example) when an unexpected incident damages components that have already been installed or are waiting to be fitted.
That could mean replacing costly parts, redoing completed work or extending the time needed to finish the job.
Contractors Works cover can help protect the installation and associated materials while the project is underway, reducing the financial impact if something goes wrong before completion.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What type of insurance do I need as a gas engineer?
Public Liability Insurance is an important starting point for gas engineers, helping protect you if your work accidentally causes injury to someone or damage to their property. Depending on how you work, you may also need Employers’ Liability, tools and equipment cover, owned or hired plant, Professional Indemnity or Contractors Works cover.
Do I need to be Gas Safe registered to get gas engineer insurance?
If you carry out gas work that legally requires Gas Safe registration, you must hold the appropriate registration and qualifications for that work. Work you are not qualified or legally permitted to carry out would not be covered.
Does my insurance cover damage to a customer’s boiler or heating system while I’m working on it?
Public Liability Insurance can cover accidental damage you cause to a customer’s wider property, but it normally excludes damage to the specific item or part of the installation you are working on. For example, accidental damage to a boiler you are directly repairing may not be covered under Public Liability. Contractors Works cover can provide additional protection for work in progress, subject to the situation and policy terms.
What’s the difference between Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance for gas engineers?
Public Liability Insurance protects against claims for accidental injury or property damage arising from your work. Professional Indemnity Insurance is designed for claims resulting from professional advice, specifications or other professional services you provide. The cover you need will depend on the type of gas engineering services your business provides.
Am I covered if my tools and equipment are stolen from my van?
If you add tools cover, insured tools can be protected against theft from your van, subject to the policy limits, security requirements and exclusions. You should check any conditions that apply to tools left in a vehicle, particularly overnight.
Am I covered if I work as a subcontractor for another company?
You can potentially be covered when working as a subcontractor, provided the work you carry out falls within the activities insured under your policy. The company hiring you may also require you to hold a particular level of Public Liability Insurance before you can start work. If you hire bona fide subcontractors yourself, they should hold their own appropriate insurance.
Does my gas engineer insurance cover plumbing or heating work alongside gas fitting?
It can cover different types of work where those activities are included within your policy. When getting a quote, select all the trades and activities you carry out, such as gas fitting, plumbing or heating engineering, so your cover accurately reflects your business. Work outside the activities you have declared may not be covered.
Am I covered if I’m self-employed or do I need different insurance as a sole trader?
Gas engineer insurance can be suitable for a range of business structures, including self-employed gas engineers, sole traders and limited companies. The cover you need depends more on how your business operates than its legal structure. For example, if you employ staff you will usually need Employers’ Liability Insurance, while a sole trader working alone may primarily need Public Liability and any relevant optional covers.
