What does heating engineer insurance cover?
Heating engineer insurance is designed to protect against the practical risks that can come with installing, maintaining and repairing heating systems in homes and commercial properties.
Public Liability Insurance can form the core of your cover, helping with claims if your work accidentally causes injury to someone or damage to their property.
You can then build your policy around the way you work. Optional protection can include cover for professional indemnity, specialist tools and equipment, tools kept in your van, and plant that you own or hire for a job.
If you have employees, Employers’ Liability Insurance can be added to help cover workplace injury claims. Contractors Works cover can also protect unfinished installations, materials and equipment while a heating project is still underway.
This flexible approach means you can tailor the cover that is relevant to your business, whether you work independently, employ a team or take on larger heating installation projects.
Make sure you have the correct insurance for your trade and be sure to check if any exclusions are relevant to what you have planned in policy documentation.

Public Liability for heating engineers
- Cover of up to £5 million is available.
- Protects heating engineers against claims from third parties, such as homeowners, customers or members of the public, who are injured or whose property is damaged as a result of your installation, maintenance or repair work.
- Does not cover damage to third-party property that forms part of the work you have been contracted to complete.
Public Liability Insurance excludes damage to the part of the property or installation you are directly working on.
For example, if you’re fitting a new heating system, replacing radiators or installing associated pipework and accidentally damage the work you’re responsible for completing, this wouldn’t typically be covered under Public Liability Insurance.
Protection for this type of damage can be added through Contractors Works cover.
Product Liability
Protects heating engineers against claims if products, materials or goods supplied and incorporated into a construction project cause injury or damage to another person’s property.
Employers’ Liability
- Cover of up to £10 million is available.
- Covers claims if an employee, apprentice or labourer is injured or dies because of the employer’s negligence.
- If they or their representative seek compensation, the insurer can handle the cost of the claim, provided policy terms have been complied with.
- Employers’ Liability Insurance is a legal requirement if you employ any staff members.
Professional Indemnity
- Cover up to £500,000 is available.
- Protects heating engineers who provide professional advice, design or specifications if a customer claims they’ve suffered a financial loss because of a professional mistake.
- Covers claims arising from negligent acts, errors or omissions by you or your employees while providing professional services.
- Does not typically cover poor workmanship, faulty materials or the cost of correcting defective work. See full policy terms.
Contractors Works
- Cover of up to £250,000 is available.
- Covers loss of or damage to plumbing work in progress that you’re responsible for.
- Includes materials being used as part of the job, whether you’re carrying out installations, repairs, refurbishments or other heating related projects.
Hired plant & tools cover
- Cover of up to £50,000 is available.
- Covers loss of or damage to hired tools, specialist equipment and plant used while carrying out heating work.
- Also covers your legal liability for ongoing hire charges following damage to hired equipment.
Owned plant & tools cover
- Cover of up to £75,000 is available.
- Covers the tools, testing equipment and specialist equipment you own and use for your work.
Tools left in a vehicle
- Available as an extension to Owned plant and tools cover only.
- Covers your portable tools, including power tools and equipment, when locked in an unattended vehicle away from the worksite.
Employees tools & personal effects
- Provides cover of up to £1000.
- Covers tools and personal belongings owned by your employees while they are working on-site.
- Also covers items belonging to people you are responsible for under a joint working agreement.
- This is not available as standalone cover. It must be included with Contract Works, Owned Plant and Tools or Hired Plant and Tools cover.
Financial Loss
- Provides up to £50,000 of cover, for accidental financial loss to another party that you are liable for.
- Covers you if a customer suffers a financial loss that is not caused by injury or property damage and you are legally liable.
- This does not include cover for financial losses relating to non-completion or late completion of works you are undertaking.
There are some situations where protection will not apply. This can include:
- Bona fide subcontractors who are expected to hold their own appropriate insurance.
- Any work undertaken over 15m from the surrounding ground level.
- Poor workmanship or the cost of correcting your own work.
- Work you are not qualified or legally permitted to carry out, where specific qualifications, registrations or regulatory requirements apply.
For information on exclusions in your cover please refer to policy documentation.
Why do you need heating engineer insurance?
Heating engineers work in a wide range of environments, from customers’ homes to commercial properties and construction sites. Installing, maintaining and repairing heating systems can bring risks such as accidental property damage, leaks, injuries or problems arising while work is being carried out.
Good training, careful checks and safe working practices all help reduce those risks, but unexpected incidents can still occur.
Heating engineer liability insurance can help protect your business if your work accidentally causes injury to someone or damage to their property. Having the right cover in place can help reduce the financial impact of a claim and give you greater confidence when taking on day-to-day heating work.
If you work as a subcontractor or on larger construction projects, you may also be asked to provide proof of Public Liability Insurance or other insurance before starting work.
Please note: You may also find that it is a regulation of your profession to have certain cover. It’s worth checking with the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors, what they advise.
Here are some common examples highlighting why heating engineers may need insurance:
Protection from claims if a client suffers injury.
Heating engineers often work in occupied homes, commercial premises and shared workspaces, where tools, equipment and ongoing installation work can create everyday risks.
A customer could come into contact with a hot surface or be injured while heating work is taking place.
If a customer, contractor or member of the public makes a claim against you, public liability insurance can help cover the associated legal fees and compensation costs.
An employee is injured while carrying out heating work.
Heating installations can involve lifting heavy components, working in confined spaces, handling hot systems and accessing difficult areas.
If an employee or temporary worker is injured while working for you, they could make a claim relating to lost earnings, medical costs or rehabilitation.
Employers’ liability insurance is a legal obligation to protect you from these situations, with fines of £2500 per day for failing to comply.
Heating and other tools or equipment are damaged.
Specialist tools and testing equipment can represent a significant investment for a heating engineer. If items such as a press tool or testing equipment are damaged or stolen, replacing them could be costly and disrupt upcoming jobs.
Tools and plant cover can help with the cost of repairing or replacing equipment you own or hire, helping you get back to work with less disruption.
A heating installation is damaged before the job is finished.
You may be part-way through installing radiators, a boiler or a wider heating system when newly fitted components or materials are accidentally damaged.
Replacing parts or redoing completed work could add unexpected costs and delay the project.
Contractors Works cover can help protect unfinished heating installations and associated materials while the job is underway, reducing the financial impact of an unexpected setback.

How much does heating engineer insurance cost?
Heating Engineer Insurance starts from just £4.70* a month.
The cost of heating engineer insurance will depend on the type of work you carry out, the size of your business and the level of cover you choose.
Your premium may be influenced by factors such as the scale of your heating engineering projects, your annual turnover, the number of people working for you and the level of liability cover you need.
Optional cover can also affect the price. For example, if you add protection for specialist tools, owned or hired plant, or Contractors Works, the value of the equipment and level of cover selected will be taken into account.
Choosing cover around the way you actually work helps you build a policy that is relevant to your business without paying for protection you do not need.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What type of insurance do I need as a heating engineer?
Public Liability Insurance is a key starting point for heating engineers, helping protect you if your work accidentally causes injury to someone or damage to their property. Depending on how your business operates, you may also want Employers’ Liability, tools and equipment cover, owned or hired plant, Professional Indemnity or Contractors Works cover.
Does my heating engineer insurance cover apprentices or employees I take on?
If you employ staff or take on an apprentice, you will usually need Employers’ Liability Insurance. This can help protect your business if an employee is injured or becomes ill as a result of their work. Employers’ Liability is a legal requirement for most UK businesses with employees.
Am I covered if a customer claims my workmanship was substandard months after the job?
Not on this policy, the cost of correcting poor workmanship or redoing defective work is not covered.
Does my insurance cover me for emergency call-outs and out-of-hours work?
Yes, you can be covered for emergency call-outs and out-of-hours work, provided the work you are carrying out falls within the heating engineering activities insured under your policy. The same policy terms, limits and exclusions will apply.
