Why do teachers and private tutors need public liability insurance?
As a private tutor or a teaching business, your role goes far beyond delivering lessons. You’re often managing multiple responsibilities, from lesson planning and tutoring to communicating with pupils, parents and clients. Despite your best efforts, things don’t always go as planned. That’s why specialist insurance for tutors and teachers is so important.
Having the right cover means that if a claim is made against you, whether relating to an accident, damage to property, or an allegation that your professional advice or services fell short of expectations – you’re supported. Even the most experienced private teachers and tutors can face unexpected challenges, and insurance can help safeguard your reputation, your finances and your future.
Tutor and teacher insurance can help protect you for the following reasons:
Public liability cover
While visiting a student’s home for a lesson, you accidentally knock over and damage a piece of their property. In this situation, the pupil or their parent may seek compensation for the cost of repairs or replacement.
Public liability insurance for tutors protects you from the legal and financial consequences of these types of claims, so you’re not left to cover the costs on your own.
Professional indemnity insurance
As a private teacher or tutor, your teaching, advice or professional services can have an important impact on your pupils and their progress. If is believed an error, oversight or piece of advice has caused financial loss, or your professional services have not met expectations, they may take legal action.
Professional indemnity is designed to protect you in these situations. It can cover legal expenses and compensation awarded, helping shield you from the financial and reputational impact of disputes.
Equipment cover
Personal accident cover
While teaching or travelling between lessons, accidents such as slips or falls can still happen and may leave you unable to work.
Personal accident cover can provide financial support during your recovery, helping to protect your income while you take the time you need to get back to teaching.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Are sports coaches, music teachers, and dance instructors covered under a standard tutor policy?
This will depend on the activities you carry out and whether they fall within the scope of the policy. Our policy covers teachers and tutors among other professions, while other teaching or coaching activities may need to be assessed separately. We also offer separate Personal Trainer Insurance for coaches. When applying, make sure you declare all the activities you undertake so the appropriate cover can be considered.
Do I need Employers’ Liability insurance if I run a small tutoring agency and hire other tutors?
If you employ staff, Employers’ Liability insurance may be a legal requirement. Our policy can provide Employers’ Liability cover for businesses with employees, including certain unpaid volunteers and labour-only subcontractors. Employers’ Liability provides protection against claims if an employee suffers a work-related injury or illness.
Does this policy provide cover for teaching multi-student groups or workshops?
Cover can depend on the specific teaching activities you declare when applying. The policy allows multiple trades or professions to be selected, and certain workshop activities can be covered. If you teach groups or run workshops, make sure these activities are included in your application and check the policy documentation for any restrictions or exclusions.
Am I legally required to hold a valid DBS check to purchase private tutor insurance?
A DBS check and insurance are separate requirements. Whether you need a DBS check will depend on your circumstances and the type of work you undertake. Having or obtaining a DBS check does not replace the need for appropriate insurance, and you should check the relevant requirements for your teaching activities.
Does tutor insurance cover the loss or theft of my business laptop, books, and teaching materials?
Business Equipment cover can be added to protect equipment used in your tutoring business. The Protectivity policy provides up to £25,000 of equipment cover, with eligible items under three years old covered on a new-for-old basis. Restrictions and exclusions apply, so check the policy wording for full details.
Do I need to inform my home buildings and contents insurance provider if I tutor from home?
You should check with your home buildings and contents insurer if you use your home for business purposes, as standard household insurance may not provide the cover you need for business activities or equipment. Separate business insurance can provide additional protection for your tutoring work.
Am I covered if I travel to a student’s house to conduct lessons and accidentally damage their property?
Public Liability insurance can protect you against third-party claims for accidental property damage where you or your business are responsible. This can apply when carrying out your teaching activities at a student’s home, subject to the policy terms and exclusions.
What is the difference between Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance for tutors?
Public Liability insurance protects you against claims from third parties for injury or damage to their property. Professional Indemnity insurance is designed to protect you against claims arising from mistakes, errors or negligence in your professional work, including allegations that your advice or services have caused financial loss.
Is insurance a legal requirement for private tutors and freelance teachers in the UK?
No, insurance is not generally a legal requirement for private tutors or freelance teachers in the UK. However, having the right cover can help protect you against claims relating to injury, property damage or professional mistakes. If you employ other tutors or staff, Employers’ Liability insurance may be a legal requirement.
