What does carpet fitter insurance cover?

Carpet fitting insurance is designed to protect self-employed fitters, flooring contractors and carpet businesses against the everyday risks that come with working in customers’ homes, commercial premises and on larger installation projects.

A key part of the cover is Public Liability Insurance. This can protect you if someone is injured because of your work or if you accidentally damage property while carrying out an installation or removal.

From there, you can build the policy around the way your business operates. Cover can be added for the tools and equipment you use to measure, cut and fit flooring, including protection for tools kept in a vehicle. Cover is also available for owned or hired plant and equipment. Contractors Works cover can help protect materials and flooring installations while a job is still in progress.

Businesses with employees can include Employers’ Liability Insurance, while Professional Indemnity can be added for protection if you those offering advice on carpet fitting.

This means the policy can work for anything from an independent fitter completing domestic jobs to a carpet contractor managing employees, materials and larger commercial projects.

Make sure you have the correct insurance for your trade and be sure to check if any exclusions are relevant to what you have planned in policy documentation.

Why is insurance important for carpet fitters?

Carpet fitting combines skilled installation work with regular access to customers’ homes, offices and commercial spaces. Although low risk, there is still the possibility of an incident, even when a job has been carefully measured, planned and prepared.

Sharp cutting tools, heavy rolls of flooring, furniture, loose materials and partially completed installations can all create potential risks while work is taking place.

Insurance can provide financial protection for claims against your business, if an incident leads to an injury or damage to someone else’s property. Some commercial clients, construction sites and principal contractors may also require carpet fitters to hold a particular level of Public Liability Insurance before allowing them to work on site.

Protection from claims if a client suffers injury or property damage.

Carpet fitting can temporarily change how people move around a room or property. Rolled carpet, underlay, tools, offcuts and partially fitted flooring can create obstacles while a job is underway.

If a customer, visitor or another tradesperson is injured as a result of your work, public liability insurance can help with legal costs and compensation if your business is held responsible.

One of your fitters is injured at work.

Installing carpet is physically demanding work. It can involve lifting and manoeuvring large rolls, prolonged kneeling, working in awkward spaces and using sharp knives and cutting equipment.

If an employee, apprentice or temporary worker suffers an injury while working for your business and makes a claim, Employers’ Liability Insurance can provide protection against the associated costs.

For most businesses employing staff, employers’ liability insurance is also a legal requirement.

Essential fitting tools are stolen or damaged.

Accurate measuring and efficient fitting depend on having the right equipment available for every job.

Your kit might include carpet knives, cutters, stretchers, knee kickers, tackers, measuring equipment and power tools. If important equipment is stolen or damaged, the replacement cost can quickly add up and could prevent you from completing planned installations.

Tools and equipment cover can help towards repairing or replacing insured items, with additional cover available for tools securely stored in a vehicle.

In progress or completed carpet work is damaged before handover.

Larger fitting contracts can involve substantial amounts of flooring and underlay being stored or installed on site over several days.

If an unexpected incident damages materials or work you have already completed, you may need to replace stock, repeat sections of the installation or spend additional time finishing the project.

Contractors Works cover can help protect insured materials and work in progress until the contract is completed.

Our experts explain why...

“Carpet fitting is skilled, hands-on work, and even a carefully planned installation can come with unexpected risks. From accidental damage in a customer’s property to injuries on site, stolen tools or materials being damaged before a job is finished, the costs can quickly affect a small business or larger flooring contractor.

Having insurance that reflects the way you work can help protect the business behind each installation. Whether you’re an independent fitter working in customers’ homes or managing teams across larger commercial projects, our carpet fitting cover has been designed to fit flexibilty with your work, your equipment and the contracts you take on.”

How much does carpet fitter liability insurance cost?

Carpet Fitter Insurance starts from just £2.89* a month.

There isn’t one standard price for carpet fitter insurance because businesses can operate very differently.

A sole trader mainly fitting carpets in domestic properties, for example, may need a different level of protection from a contractor employing several fitters and working on high-value commercial installations.

Your premium can be influenced by factors such as your turnover, the type of properties and projects you work on, the number of people you employ and the amount of Public Liability cover you choose.

The additional protection you select will also make a difference. If you insure your tools, equipment, hired plant or contract works, the values and limits you choose will be taken into account when calculating the premium.

Building the policy around the size and nature of your carpet fitting business means you can select cover that is relevant to the work you actually carry out.
